Course Intro

BASIC CARDIAC SCANNING

Introduction

Detailed echocardiography is definitively the realm of the specialist cardiologist, no question. However, the ability to perform a cardiac examination at a more basic level can still give very useful information on cardiac anatomy and function and lead to a more meaningful referral, when required. This one day course will show you how to produce the 4 basic orthogonal views of the adult heart which will allow assessment of the cardiac chambers and valves.

Content

  • Scanning protocol and machine setup
  • The 4 basic planes:
  • Parasternal long axis
  • Parasternal short axis
  • Apical 4/5 chamber views
  • Substernal 4 chamber view
  • M-mode assessment
  • Assessment of :
  • Chamber size (dilatations)
  • Wall thickness and movement (cardiomyopathies)
  • Valve movement (stenoses, regurgitations)
  • IA and IV septae (septal defects)
  • M-mode measurements
  • Doppler assessment
  • Ejection fraction
  • Pericardial sac (effusions)
